The Tuggeranong Arts Centre is located by Lake Tuggeranong in Canberra and is a multipurpose community facility containing dance and performing arts studios, visual art facilities including a gallery and workshops, a theatre and a café.
It provides an emphasis on youth programs and, during my daily walking commute, I encounter young people in the facility’s dance studios expressing themselves, particularly performing in Fresh Funk classes.
The facility was opened in 1998 and subsequently renovated in 2013. It is managed by Tuggeranong Community Arts Incorporated and funded and supported by the ACT Government.
Due to its location by the lake, the Arts Centre is architecturally nautically themed. The sloping roof visually depict sails and the posts (flag poles) represent the masts of a ship.
